How to do it ? THE BASIC RULES OF TRAINING
Author: Helena, Translation: Mirkawolf (Jul 20, 2002 - 03:17 AM)
Training
  • Dog doesn't understand human speach !

  • Every trick or performance you must somehow "explain" to your dog. That practically means, that you help to your dog to take the right position or to do the requested trick (by jerk of the leash, pushing dog's back, showing him some treat etc.)

  • The command (usually voice, sometimes voice+gesture) must always come before this help. First we say the command, then we manipulate with the dog.

  • After having success (completing the command) always follows the treat. The sooner after the command you treat your dog, the more succesfull the treat is.

Remember :

  • PHYSICAL PRESSURE - TREAT
No matter how strongly you will push your dog to do the trick, the following treat must beat the negatives of this pushing - that means that you always end in good.

  • FROM EASY TO DIFFICULT
The difficulty of training we increase slowly. First we train the dog in calm and not disturbed place. After he can do all well, we add the disturbing elements (other people, dogs, noises). At the tricks which are composed from partial acts (for example aport) or which request holding time from the dog, we train the dog in separated phases. Those we then compose into one excersise, or we slowly and patiently increase the distance and time of doing the excersise.

  • 1 COMMAND = 1 PERFORMANCE
This means, that we give one command (loudly and clearly) and right after this we try to make the dog to do the trick (exercise). In the phase of "explaining" we can repeat the command as the proof, that the dog is doing well, but only after the moment, when the dog did the excersise (for example command "SIT DOWN!" - jerk with the leash + pushing the dog's back - dog sits down - "Good boy, sit down!").

  • CONSISTENCY
Thatīs one of the most important parts of the training. If we want to forbid some action to our dog, it must be forbidden always, not according to our mood. Dog doesn't understand, why one day he can do things freely, and other day it is forbidden. If we give a command to our dog, we must insist on it to be done. From this it is clear, that before we give the command, it is neccesary to consider real chances of the dog to do the excersise. It is no use to command the dog from 5 m distance "Lay down", when he doesn't do it even at our leg, and you can't make the dog to do it from the long distance. Once the dog understands, that from certain distance it is not neccessary to listen commands, you have problems comming soon (especially with CsW's).
