Degenerative Myelopathy

Is there anyone of you, who knows a CsW with degenerative myelopathy?

Dogs with this disease become paralysed on the back side when they become older.
In the past there were a lot other diagnoses about dogs with paralysed hind limbs. But now there is a test for right diagnose for several breeds.

This disease is also spread in German shepherd breed and the Saarloos breed.
There was a test for GSD and since last month also for SWH! :ylsuper
So with good breeding selection there is no need to spread this disease more in these breeds.:)

Because this disease is also in GSD and SWH breed, I was wondering if anyone knows if degenerative myelopathy (or older CsW with paralysed hind limbs) also exists in CsW breed.

Explanation in English about what is degenerative myelopathy (of Michigan veterinary specialists)
  • Degenerative myelopathy is a condition that results in progressive paralysis of the hind limbs in middle-aged to older German Shepherd dogs.
  • The cause of this degeneration is unknown, but the underlying disease is degeneration of the white matter in the spinal cord.
  • The white matter is the portion of the spinal cord responsible for transmitting information between the brain and the body.

Hi Mijke,

yes the race of the Czechoslovakian wolfhound is well touched by degenerative myelopathy ...

this dog is Justine Stella Atoi de Louba Tar

http://www.wolfdog.org/dbase/d/4000

following this advertisement of its new owner, a discussion was opened on this subject on a French forum other that the forum of wolfdog.org ( http://www.amicale-chien-loup-tcheco...ic.php?id=1458 ). One asks me to make the relay, if you want more information, do not hesitate, I would put the questions ;-)

as soon

Martial

Thank you very much for this information! :gent

Update :

In the meantime I did find out there are indeed CsW’s with Degenerative Myelopathy :(

This genetic disease inherited in the same way as for example pituitary dwarfism.
To ban this disease in future, the only thing is not to make any longer crossings between carrier x carrier!(of this mutated gen)
Because of a simple test can be established if a dog is carrier of this mutated gene. :cool3

The “van Haeringen lab (in Holland) has developed a test, which can determine the mutation of the gene that is responsible for DM.
This test is already available for SWH and German shepherd breed.
And it is probably also possible to validate this test for CsW breed! :)

So I ask your help for the validation of the DM test for the CsW breed!

When you have or know a CsW with DM and you want to cooperate with the validation of this test, please contact me: [email protected]

@Martial: Please can you transtale this and add also on the French forms?
thanks in advance!

Mijke,

I am curious if you have had any response? The OFA offers genetic tests for DM for all breeds in the US (US$65) - but it cautions owners of breeds without "validation" not to make breeding decisions based on the information. The GSD is validated (with such high numbers: 54% ABNORMAL:cry:) through the database, of course the CSV is not. I think I am going to test my dogs (they do not display any symptoms of DM) through the OFA, even if does not really affect my breeding, to begin statistics for the breed in the US. Please let me know if these results can be of any use now or in the future...I assume the test is probably similar or identical to the test you mention in identifying the genetic markers...:ehmmm

All of the very best,
Marcy

Hi Marcy!

Thanks for your reply!

But before the DM test can be validated for the CsW breed, they need to compare the DNA of CsW who is proven carrier of DM.

Because sometimes there are small differences in DNA markers and then the same test cannot be used for all breeds.

Only by comparing DNA of proven carriers (of a breed that already can be tested and an other breed), they can see if the genetic defect is the same.
And when it is the same then the test can be used for this breed.

I don't know if this DM test in your country is already realy validated for CsW breed.

But I know there are (and were) also CsW’s with DM……..

But till now I could not find an owner (of a still living CsW who is a proven carrier of DM) who want to cooperate :(

For the validation the owner only has to send some EDTA blood (of a proven carrier)and the lab will make the validation tests for Free.

Maybe people do not want to speak about this in public.
But I hope that somebody will cooperate to validate the test and will contact me by mail! :) [email protected]

No, I know for sure it is not validated for the CSV in the US (nothing is, yet ;-)). The test here requires a deceased dog that is a suspected carrier to have it's spinal cord examined, so I think it (hopefully!) may never happen. http://offa.org/dnatesting/dmotherbreeds.html

Still, the same test is used for every breed (OFA), so I think I will have the test done, anyways - and once the test is validated in Europe, I will have some results to compare.

Thanks again - and good luck finding volunteers!

Marcy
