Potential Wolfdog ban in Australia
 

Hi Everyone

Been a while since I wrote on this board, however I have kept coming back to read it every once and while.

As mentioned in the title of this thread I have read the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) here in Australia have mounted a campaign to have Wolf hybrids banned in Australia. Now I know the CsV and Saarloos aren't wolf hybrids anymore but they looking to ban the importation of any dog that is a wolf hybrid or one that looks like one regardless of how many generations the dog is away from the F1 cross.

They are claiming the wolf dogs will breed with the local dingoes and make "super effective sheep killing machines" as well as devistate the local wildlife. I have already wrote a letter to my local member of government about it and was just wondering what else I could use for information to give to him about the CsV, Saarloos and Lupos to have them exempt from the ban.

Hmmm and how long quarantene is for animals which are going to your country? 6 or 8 months? It is impossible for wolfdog puppy. It is problem for adult wolfdog too.......

Depends on which country the animal is coming from and when it had it's rabies vacc and when the blood titres are cleared.

It can be anywhere from 30 days to 6 months, for a pup to come over here it would have to be at least 12 weeks old for an adult it would have to reside in the country of departure for at least 12 months. Not to mention all the shots and blood work has to be done by a AQIS approved vet.

Are they going to ban all dogs then, since all dogs are from a wolf or some wolf ancestor?

Huskies look like wolves, are they going to be banned? The Finnish Spitz is a very primitive breed (wolfy in temperament), so are they going to be banned?

It's sad when people who know nothing about dogs get enough looks (or have enough money) in the government to get attention.

As far as I know

They are looking at banning Wolf dog hybrids and anything that is like a wolf in looks. I know at one time they were looking at banning Large dog breeds due to the feral dog populations and farmers all up in arms about live stock being killed.

They also banned Savannah Cats which has sparked all this debate to begin with.

Australia has gone down the road of banning wolf type dogs before. In the 1950's to the 1960's we had a ban in place for German Shepherd Dogs.
I brought this issue to the board to try and gather as much info I can get to help prevent the ban of CsV, Lupos and Saarloos going into place.

So they're going to ban:

Akitas, huskies, malamutes, Klee Kais for looking like wolves?

Finnish Spitz because they look like a fox (many people used to mistake ours for a fox) and have a very wolf like temperament.

While I admit the livestock issue is an issue (we have an issue with neighborhood cats (pets and feral) trying to get to our chickens), I don't think it is a need for an outright ban.

A ban won't curb the issue with wild / feral animals nor will it deter the people who contribute to the issue, it will mainly hurt the people who are responsible.

:lol: ..... I think that there is a bigger risk that a mating hapens whit a Australian Cattledog and a Dingo. But non of the mixes will probably be better than the pure Dingo to kill a animal ;-)

I think only 15´000 years of breeding whit very vary hard selektion made them that good 8)

This amuses me, just because Dingo's are technically feral as well. They were brought over by indigenous people and have had some time to evolve. Therefore I believe it would be fair to say that they are as good as killing machines will get when it comes to dogs in Australia -and if they continue to evolve perhaps they will get better. CWDs can not possibly pose more of a threat than what we already have here.

I am all for the work that the RSPCA does (thank god we have them!), but perhaps they sometimes get carried away without really looking at the facts...
