The evidence from DNA and from spinal cord samples does not bear that out however – they do show the same SOD1 mutation, and the spinal cords have the same signature cellular changes that other breeds affected with DM also show. GSD’s do have many different spinal cord issues however, and clinical signs can mimic DM. Because of the history of DM in this breed, in some cases an assumption of DM is made based on breed and clinical signs, where further neurologic workup may reveal a different cause for the observed symptoms. Some of these other causes may be treatable, so it is useful to identify the real cause of symptoms and not make assumptions. |
